"We have a vision for Memphis where you don't have to own a car to get outside of your neighborhood. We have a vision for an equitable, accessible transportation system that allows residents and visitors alike to see all of the amazing parts of Memphis that we have to offer."
It might seem as simple as getting from Point A to Point B, but the reality is that transportation impacts every aspect of urban life from getting to and from work to how to get groceries or get kiddos to school. The cost associated with transportation — whether that’s purchasing and upkeep of a vehicle or a bicycle or bus— impacts economic mobility.
So as we celebrate the wins in our city like the Downtown Mobility Center, we want to shine a light on the day-to-day logistics that make our city function — central to that is transportation.

"It takes all of us working together to build a more just world so that we can all live, work, and thrive in this community together."
We're continuing the conversation we began a few weeks ago by discussing how state and local legislation impacts healthy communities, livability, and economic progress. Entrepreneurship is risky business (literally), but in Memphis, the rewards often outshine the risk. Memphis is known as a city that produces movers and shakers—problem solvers who get creative and look beyond limitations—but what are we doing to support and keep them here? How do we define success and how does hope factor into a business plan? Can we invest in innovation with more than just money? Perhaps most importantly, why is the 901 the perfect place to get started? We covered all of this and more at Celebrate What’s Right: Risky Business conversation on entrepreneurship from April 6th, 2023. This event was sponsored by First Horizon Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee, and Duncan Williams Asset Management.
We work very hard to make these events accessible, but we know that there are a myriad of reasons why members of our community had to miss this conversation. In an effort to ensure that these leaders’ insights are disseminated far and wide, we’re bringing you their conversation on the radio waves this morning.

- Jessica Taveau, President and CEO at Epicenter Memphis (Moderator)

For our final installment of episodes in 2021, our very own Erin Wendell, Director of New Memphis Educator and Collegiate Programs, chose an episode that she just could not stop thinking about. This episode, which originally aired in May 2021, is more of a hearty main dish than a starchy side, so put on your stretchy pants and get ready to dig in!
Law and Order. Our justice system is set up to be a fair system of checks and balances.. right? Not necessarily. When you're a hammer, everything can look like a nail. Josh Spickler of Just City shares gaps where the justice system continually says, "can't touch this" because it's "hammer time" in his 2018 TEDxMemphis Talk, "Crime and Lots of Punishment."
But what's the alternative? He gives his a-ha moments, possible solutions, and ways he and others have already made lasting change in Tennessee. You won't want to miss this one!

As our holiday gift to you, dear listener, we're revisiting a few of our favorite episodes in a series we're literally calling "Our Favorite Things." (cue the Julie Andrews music!)
This first one was hand-selected by our sometimes co-host, AT, and originally aired in December 2020. As to why she selected this particular episode, she said: "First, Ned Canty is hilarious! But more importantly, he has a way of explaining things that seem so high-brow to make them very accessible and exciting. I assumed I wouldn't like opera, but this episode made me rethink that entire notion completely."
We dare you to not smile while you re-visit just how fun opera (and Opera Memphis) can be!

Whether it's a new entrepreneurial effort or a foundation celebrating their diamond anniversary, our city (and its people!) never cease to deliver on generosity.
Fresh off of Small Business Saturday, the sisters of ARCHd share their story and why they teamed up with other dynamic duos (like City Tasting Box, Terra Cotta, Primas, and WeTightKnit) to share the love. Then, Jenny Koltnow of The Campbell Clinic Foundation shares the impact of their 75 year history + what's on the horizon.
On this Giving Tuesday, we also ask that you consider New Memphis and WYXR with your own generosity. This radio station and our show may be powered by sound, but it's funded by the heart and soul of this city...YOU! If you like what you hear, help us keep it going into 2022 and beyond by giving at newmemphis.org. and wyxr.org.

Austin Crowder is making his curriculum come alive for his Soulsville students by asking “Can Government Class Revolutionize Police Encounters?” And he’s taking it a step further by making his findings free, open to the nation, and scalable for every situation.
A brief “Know Your Rights” curriculum being added to Government and Civics classes throughout the country could dramatically mitigate the risks faced by civilians and police throughout interactions, increase police accountability, decrease incarceration rates, and save lives. Austin Crowder discusses the unit’s learning process and invites them to experience what makes it effective and explore the remarkable survey data demonstrating its impact. He paints a picture of how, if scaled, the unit could fundamentally shift the narrative around police encounters, benefit both civilian and officer, mitigate dangerous escalation, increase self-efficacy of civilians, and lower incarceration rates. Austin currently teaches government and economics at The Soulsville Charter School in South Memphis. Throughout eight years as an educator he has developed a Know Your Rights Unit for implementation in civics classes throughout the city and country.
